Messi Masterclass Sees Inter Miami Rout CF Montréal 4-1
Montréal, QC – Lionel Messi put on a dazzling display at Stade Saputo on Saturday night, scoring twice and assisting another as Inter Miami roared back from an early deficit to defeat CF Montréal 4-1 in a thrilling MLS encounter.
The victory marks a strong return to league action for the Herons after their recent Club World Cup campaign.
Despite an initial setback, with Prince Owusu giving Montréal a shock lead just two minutes into the game, Inter Miami quickly found their rhythm, spearheaded by their Argentine maestro.
The equalizer came in the 33rd minute, with Messi turning provider to set up Tadeo Allende, who fired home from outside the box. Just seven minutes later, Messi himself got on the scoresheet, receiving a header from Luis Suárez, dribbling past defenders, and clinically finishing to give Miami a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
The second half saw Inter Miami solidify their dominance. Telasco Segovia extended their lead in the 60th minute with a spectacular strike, and only two minutes later, Messi delivered another moment of magic, weaving through the Montréal defense for his second goal of the night, putting the game out of reach at 4-1.
Messi’s performance was a stark contrast to his previous MLS visit to Canada, where he was held scoreless. His two goals bring his season tally to 12 in 14 MLS games, further solidifying his impact on the league.
While Montréal’s fans showed immense respect for Messi, with chants of his name echoing through the stadium, some Montréal players expressed frustration at the opposing support, especially given their team’s struggles.
Inter Miami’s next challenge will be on July 9, when they travel to face the New England Revolution. CF Montréal, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from this comprehensive defeat.
