Lagos, Nigeria – The Nigerian football community is in deep mourning today following the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana.” Rufai, aged 61, died in Lagos on Thursday morning, July 3, 2025, after a prolonged illness.

Peter Rufai was a towering figure in Nigerian football history, widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest goalkeepers. He earned an impressive 65 international caps for the Super Eagles throughout his illustrious career.

 

He was a pivotal member of the “golden generation” that clinched Nigeria’s second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Tunisia in 1994. He also proudly represented the nation at the FIFA World Cup tournaments in 1994 and 1998, where the Super Eagles reached the Round of 16 on both occasions.

The NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, expressed his shock and sadness, saying,

“This is really, really shocking… We earnestly pray to the Almighty God to grant him eternal rest, and to comfort all his loved ones as well as the entire Nigerian football family.”
