Hollywood Mourns the Loss of Michael Madsen, Dead at 67
Veteran actor Michael Madsen, known for his indelible “tough guy” roles, particularly in the films of Quentin Tarantino, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the age of 67. His manager confirmed the cause of death as cardiac arrest.
Madsen was found unresponsive at his home in Malibu, California, by authorities responding to a 911 call. No foul play is suspected, and his death is believed to be from natural causes.
A prolific actor with a career spanning four decades and over 300 credits, Madsen carved out a unique niche in Hollywood with his gravelly voice and intense, often menacing, screen presence.
He was a frequent collaborator with director Quentin Tarantino, starring in iconic roles such as the chilling Mr. Blonde in “Reservoir Dogs” (1992) and Budd in the “Kill Bill” films.
Other notable appearances in Tarantino’s oeuvre include “The Hateful Eight” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”Beyond his work with Tarantino, Madsen’s diverse filmography included roles in “Thelma & Louise,” “Free Willy,” “Donnie Brasco,” “Sin City,” and “Die Another Day.”
He also lent his distinctive voice to various video games, including “Grand Theft Auto III” and the “Dishonored” series.
In a statement, Madsen’s managers, Ron Smith and Susan Ferris, and publicist Liz Rodriguez highlighted his recent dedication to independent films, stating he “was really looking forward to this next chapter in his life.” They also revealed that Madsen was preparing to release a new book of poetry titled “Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems.”
Madsen’s passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences and tributes from friends and co-stars. His sister, actress Virginia Madsen, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, describing him as “thunder and velvet. Mischief wrapped in tenderness.
A poet disguised as an outlaw.” Actors Vivica A. Fox and Harvey Keitel also expressed their sadness, with Fox calling him “a talented man with an AMAZING on-screen presence” and Keitel remarking, “We’ve lost another great American poet.”
Michael Madsen is survived by his four children.
