A Date Turns Deadly: The Heartbreaking Story of Olorato Mongale and the Syndicate Behind Her Murder

What began as an exciting new connection turned into a brutal tragedy for 30-year-old Olorato Mongale, a promising postgraduate student and former radio presenter from South Africa. Her murder has shocked the nation and highlighted the chilling reality of gender-based violence in the country.

The Fatal Date:

On the afternoon of Sunday, May 25, 2025, Olorato Mongale left her Athol residence in Johannesburg for a date. She met a man she knew only as “John,” whom she had encountered a few days earlier at a shopping center. CCTV footage later showed her walking towards a white VW Polo with fake license plates in Kew, Johannesburg, around 3 PM. Olorato texted a friend, expressing her excitement about the date. Less than two hours later, community members helped police discover her lifeless and “brutally violated” body in a nearby open field in Lombardy West.

Police Uncover a Chilling Syndicate:

Olorato Mongale: South African police say they have broken a syndicate targeting women

Investigators quickly moved on the case, making rapid progress. They tracked the white VW Polo to a panel beater workshop in Phoenix, Durban, on May 26. Forensic experts found traces of blood inside the vehicle.

Police soon identified and named three suspects in connection with Olorato’s murder: Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya, Fezile Ngubane, and Bongani Mthimkhulu. They warned the public these men were armed and dangerous.

Authorities believe a criminal “syndicate” targets women in malls for kidnapping and robbery. “They propose them, request to take them out on a date. When they agree, that is when they plan to rob them,” a police spokesperson explained. Disturbingly, both Mthimkhulu and Makhanya had faced previous arrests in April for kidnapping and robbery in Boksburg, using the same white VW Polo, and were out on bail.

Major Breakthroughs and a Dramatic Shootout

The main suspect in the Olorato Mongale murder was fatally wounded in a shootout with police

On May 29, in a significant development, police took the parents of one of the suspects into custody. The father reportedly owns the VW Polo involved in the crime, while the mother allegedly tipped off her son, allowing him to flee just moments before police arrived at his Inanda home.

In the early hours of Friday, May 30, a police task team located the main suspect, Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya, hiding at a residential complex in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban. When officers announced their presence, Makhanya opened fire. Police returned fire, fatally wounding him. Regional police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi confirmed Makhanya had 28 ID cards and a dozen mobile phones on him at the time of his death. Makhanya also reportedly confessed to a gospel coordinator who harbored him, even speaking of suicide.

Family’s Relief and Ongoing Search:

While Makhanya’s death doesn’t erase their pain, Olorato’s family expressed relief, stating it offered a sense of finality. “It is quite a relief for the family that justice for Olorato, before we even lay her body to rest, would have been served,” a family spokesperson told SABC News.

Police have received over 90 calls from women across the country, all claiming to be victims of the three suspects in Mongale’s murder, suggesting a much larger pattern of violence. The investigation remains active as authorities continue their search for the two remaining suspects, Fezile Ngubane and Bongani Mthimkhulu.

Olorato Mongale, a journalism graduate and a woman described by friends and family as outspoken, bubbly, and one who “lived with purpose and love,” now symbolizes the urgent need to address the horrific rates of femicide and gender-based violence in South Africa.
