Spain Dominates Portugal 5-0 in Euro 2025 Opener, Bern, Switzerland
July 3, 2025 – World champions Spain made a resounding statement in their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 opener, routing Iberian rivals Portugal with a dominant 5-0 victory at the Wankdorf Stadium.
The match, which began with an emotional tribute to the late Portuguese men’s international Diogo Jota, saw Spain assert their authority from the outset, scoring four goals in a blistering first half.
The reigning world champions wasted no time in making their mark. Esther González opened the scoring in just the second minute, expertly flicking a ball past Portuguese goalkeeper Inês Pereira.
Only five minutes later, teenage sensation Vicky López doubled Spain’s lead, latching onto a Mariona Caldentey cross. Spain continued to press, and their relentless attack was rewarded again in the 41st minute when the incomparable Alexia Putellas, showcasing brilliant control, slotted home the third goal.
Just two minutes later, González bagged her second of the night, tucking in a rebound after a shot came off the post, sending Spain into the break with a commanding 4-0 lead.
Euro 2025 campaign
While Spain’s intensity slightly dropped in the second half, they remained firmly in control. Substitute Cristina Martin-Prieto added a fifth goal in stoppage time with a powerful header, capping off a near-perfect start to their Euro 2025 campaign. Notably, two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí, who had been recovering from illness, made an appearance off the bench in the latter stages, a positive sign for Spain’s depth.
The match was preceded by a poignant moment of silence for Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who were tragically killed in a car crash. Players from both teams wore black armbands, and Portuguese fans displayed banners in tribute, creating a somber yet unified atmosphere before kick-off.
This victory marks Spain’s largest-ever win at a Women’s Euro finals and extends their winning streak against Portugal to seven consecutive matches. For Portugal, it was a challenging start to the tournament, made even tougher by the circumstances surrounding the game.
They will need to regroup quickly as they look to recover in Group B, which also features Italy and Belgium. Spain will face Belgium next on Monday.
