Good news for “Squid Game” fans! While the recently released Season 3 is confirmed to be the final season of the main storyline, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has indeed revealed an idea for a potential spinoff series he’d like to explore in the future.

The spinoff idea, which he describes as a “faint ideation” and “not a sequel,” would focus on the three-year gap between Season 1 and Season 2.
Specifically, Hwang is interested in delving into the lives of the mysterious figures behind the games:
- The Recruiters: He wants to show what characters like the Recruiter (played by Gong Yoo) were doing during this period.
- The Masked Men/Officers: This would include exploring the lives of the various masked guards and officers, and potentially how they operate outside of the gaming arena.
- Captain Park (aka The Front Man): Hwang is particularly keen to portray what the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) was doing during this time, and perhaps how he became involved or stayed on top of things related to Gi-hun.
Hwang told Entertainment Weekly: “There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that. So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in the future.”

While he stressed that Season 3 provides a definitive ending to Gi-hun’s story, he’s open to continuing the “Squid Game” universe in other ways, saying “never say never” to spinoffs. He also acknowledged the physical toll creating the series has taken on him, even requiring more teeth to be pulled during the production of seasons 2 and 3 due to stress.

“Squid Game USA” primarily refers to two distinct developments following the global success of the original South Korean series:
“Squid Game: The Challenge” (Reality Competition Show):
This is a real-life reality competition series based on the original show’s premise. It’s a Netflix original produced as a collaboration between Studio Lambert and The Garden (UK-based production companies).
It features 456 real players competing for a massive $4.56 million (USD) cash prize, making it the largest cast and one of the largest prizes in reality TV history.
While contestants were cast globally, the majority of players are from the United States, and all participants must be English-speaking.
Season 1 premiered in November/December 2023.
“Squid Game: The Challenge” has been renewed for a second season on Netflix, indicating its continued popularity.
There were some controversies during Season 1 regarding filming conditions, with some contestants claiming hypothermia during the “Red Light, Green Light” game, though Netflix denied the severity of the reports.

A Potential American Narrative Spin-off/Continuation (Often rumored as “Squid Game: America”)
Following the recent release of “Squid Game” Season 3 (which premiered on June 27, 2025), there’s significant buzz about an American narrative spin-off.
The Season 3 finale directly teased this. In the closing moments of the final episode, the Front Man is seen in Los Angeles, where he observes a new recruiter, played by Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett, playing the ddakji game with a man in an alleyway. This scene is widely interpreted as a narrative handoff and a direct setup for an American expansion of the “Squid Game” universe.
It’s reportedly not a direct remake, but rather a continuation that delves deeper into the global mythology of the games.
Acclaimed director David Fincher (known for Fight Club, Se7en, Mindhunter) is reportedly attached to direct or produce this American spin-off, with Dennis Kelly (Utopia) reportedly handling writing duties.
While Netflix has not yet made an official announcement, industry reports suggest that production could begin in Los Angeles as early as December 2025.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has stated that while he was not officially notified about this specific spin-off, he is a big fan of David Fincher and would be excited to see what he creates.
So, “Squid Game USA” currently refers to both the successful reality competition show and the highly anticipated, potentially upcoming narrative spin-off series set in America, which was explicitly hinted at in the main series’ finale.
