Denzel Washington Continues Reign as Hollywood Icon with New Projects and Accolades.
Hollywood titan Denzel Washington remains as prolific and celebrated as ever, with recent news highlighting his enduring impact on cinema and upcoming ventures that are sure to excite fans.
Most notably, a sequel to the acclaimed 1995 submarine thriller “Crimson Tide” is officially in development. Original producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed the project, and talks are underway for Washington to reprise his iconic role as Lieutenant Commander Ronald “Ron” Hunter.
While still in early stages and script-dependent, the prospect of Washington returning to the tense underwater drama has generated significant buzz.
Beyond new projects, Washington continues to receive well-deserved recognition for his legendary career. Just recently, in May 2025, he was presented with a surprise Honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This prestigious lifetime achievement award, a rare honor bestowed only 22 times in the festival’s history, underscored his unparalleled contributions to film.
The award was presented by his longtime collaborator, director Spike Lee, ahead of the premiere of their latest film, “Highest 2 Lowest,” which is set to hit select theaters on August 22, 2025, and Apple TV+ on September 5, 2025. Meanwhile, a prequel series to Washington’s post-apocalyptic film “The Book of Eli” is also in development, with John Boyega slated to headline and executive produce.
The series will delve into the early life of Washington’s character, set immediately after the cataclysmic nuclear event that scorched the Earth. This renewed interest in “The Book of Eli” also saw the 2010 film recently surge in streaming popularity, dethroning “Dark Winds” on AMC+’s U.S.
