Heavyweights Form Grand Coalition Under ADC Banner Ahead of 2027 Elections
Abuja, Nigeria – July 3, 2025 – In a significant political development shaking Nigeria’s landscape, a broad coalition of opposition figures and parties has officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their united platform to contest the 2027 general elections.
The move, aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and addressing what they describe as the nation’s current challenges, was formally unveiled in Abuja yesterday.
The coalition boasts an impressive roster of prominent Nigerian politicians, including former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi; former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai; former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi; and former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, among others.
Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has been nominated as the Interim National Chairman of the revitalized ADC, while Rauf Aregbesola will serve as the National Secretary.
Speaking At The Unveiling
Speaking at the unveiling, Senator Mark emphasized that the coalition’s primary goal is not a power grab but a fundamental repositioning of Nigeria’s democracy to foster good governance. He extended an invitation to all Nigerian politicians committed to national progress to join the ADC ahead of 2027.
Peter Obi
Peter Obi, a key figure in the alliance, reiterated his support for the ADC as the coalition platform, stating that the decision was driven by a commitment to provide competent and compassionate leadership for Nigeria. He stressed the importance of collaboration among opposition forces, noting that “no one group can change Nigeria alone.”
The formation of this grand coalition comes amidst widespread concerns among opposition figures regarding the nation’s economic hardship, insecurity, and what they perceive as a “creeping civilian dictatorship” under the current administration. Malam Nasir El-Rufai, commenting after the event, criticized the ruling party’s leadership and attributed the country’s current woes to their governance.
He also noted that the ADC was chosen due to its current lack of internal crises.
While the coalition projects a united front, reports indicate that a faction within the African Democratic Congress has reportedly kicked against the adoption of the party as the coalition’s platform. Despite this, the dominant narrative points to a powerful new force emerging on Nigeria’s political scene, with the ADC now poised as a major contender for the 2027 polls.
The coalition has set an ambitious target of 35 million votes for the 2027 elections, signaling their determination to make a significant impact. This development is expected to ignite intense political maneuvering and realignments as Nigeria prepares for its next electoral cycle.
